The only thing special about a filename that starts with a dot is that
the 'ls' command won't show it by default (use 'ls -a' to list all
files).

Your home directory will have a number of files like .bashrc or .profile.

If you're looking at your home directory with a graphical file manager,
you may need to turn on an option to show 'hidden' files. In this
context, 'hidden' means 'starts with a dot'.
