mod_gzip is great, it's mod_deflate in Apache 2. awstats can tell you
how much you've saved from using it, uncompressed I've sent 74.70MB of
data this month, it compressed down to 24.63MB, saving 50.07 MB (67%).
Of course, I do have ~200GB as a traffic limit, but I've never got
anywhere near that.

If you're planning on using it with Apache as a proxy I've got a good
article on my site, though it does concentrate mostly on setting up
the correct headers for caching. See
http://www.sitharus.com/articles/zope-apache-and-caches at the bottom.
