I was suspecting a faulty disk from the first errors
(rpmdb:.*Input/output error). I certainly wouldn't have rebooted the
box without investigating that possibility further (actually I generally
avoid rebooting boxes until I know what's wrong with them, especially
ones that aren't in the same room as me).
dmesg
and perhaps
smartctl
are your friends.
If you see errors that look anything like this:
hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hda: dma_intr: error=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, LBAsect=32837, sector=32774
end_request: I/O error, dev 03:01 (hda), sector 32774
EXT3-fs error (device ide0(3,1)): ext3_get_inode_loc: unable to read inode block - inode=4083, block=16387
be very afraid. (Those from a box that made my life more.... exciting
this week. Fortunately it was a test box, and the production box was
ready.)
