And in addition to Davids response:

In notebooks and ACPI a wonky BIOS often causes problems,
not all manufacturers make fully compliant BIOSes but then
supply windows-drivers to compensate for that.  I've had 
cases of IBM Thinkpad and Compaq EVOs with faulty BIOS,
and problems with linux went away after a firmware upgrade.
