Well, I answered that question last night. I think there was someone
asking if a BIOS could be updated from a USB floppy.
It seems that it can't, or at least didn't work on my VIA EPIA motherboard
- I did spend some time sacrificing goats, crossing fingers, touching
wood, throwing salt over the shoulder, praying to the great rabbit etc
before I restarted the PC when it appeared to lock up before the flashing
started when using the USB drive.
I suppose if I think about it it makes some sense ... IDE and Floppy
ports are pretty standard (at least compared to USB). Something happening
on the USB port in the middle of the flashing could makes things go bye
byes, so killing the USB ports before the flashing is a 'good idea'. Hmm,
it would be interesting to try it again at some stage with a USB keyboard
- any volunteers? ;-)
Because it was new (secondhand) pc I was happy to boot to DOS from the USB
floppy drive, fdisk, format and sys a partition, copy the files across and
flash it from the harddisk.
Makes ya think that there is still some value in keeping a small fat(32)
partition.
