I was referring to a M$ Windows XP partition which I rarely use,
preferring the
multi-threaded Debian unstable kernel, although I'm having to use XP when I
need a GUI (like now, allowing me to cut 'n paste your message from
WellyLUG
archives into Thunderbird).
I was making the point that the mouse worked when I used Win XP, showing
that
it is not a hardware problem.

Fair enough.

No.
Ideally you are right to say I should have no boot error
messages. These include 'Bastille-firewall is not configured yet'
although I long ago apt-removed Bastille in favour of iptables,
'Please edit the file /etc/MailScanner/MailScanner.conf according
to your needs ...' although I use spamd and clamav, 'Starting mail
retrieval agent: system-wide fetchmail not configured' (Mutt seems
to work OK - I've never figured that one out), and 'Error while writing
to SYSLOG "$MAILDIR/etc-procmail.log" ' - which is on my TODO list
but I keep getting sidetracked my crises like 'No Core Pointer'.
I'm thinking of changing to stable, although I get easily bored
without near-daily upgrades.
The point is that none of these messages relate to mouse or pointer function.

Nope.
I'm fairly sure my use of '/dev/input/mice' in /etc/X11/xorg.conf is OK,
which leaves the question of missing devices or modules. I was not able to modprobe
snd-mixer-oss and snd-pcm-oss and mousedev and usbhid or apt-install xserver-xorg-input-mouse
or xserver-xorg-input-kbd .. Deb unstable could not find them and I could find no trace of
them via pkg-search on www.debian.org
