After sending that message, I went and checked my laptop and find it's now 
running Vector Linux ... I now seem to remember that I did have some 
problem with Puppy Linux that I couldn't be bothered sorting out ... so 
installed Vector Linux instead!  Vector runs reasonably well on the laptop, 
doesn't use KDE but offers a variety of other X-windows interfaces.

Oh well, that wasn't very helpful was it :-(
