[wellylug] APT Mirrors broken?

I've been looking around for reliable APT mirrors and I've 
come to the conclusion that things are somewhat munted 
somewhere in the APT department. I can apt-get update 
usually without too many problems, but now and then I get 
errors, of various sorts - 503s and 404s for example. 
Checksum errors.

But when I apt-get upgrade I seem to get errors much of the 
times of various sorts. But if it fails, I just try a bit 
later and the files that got missed get brought down fine!

It doesn't seem to matter which mirrors I use. I see the 
same problems on the US mirrors, or the UK mirrors and on 
other mirrors.

Is it just me or is there a systemic problem? It makes 
automating the process pretty hard.
