[wellylug] LVM, Striping or not to strip...

Hello all,

I have just gone through installing Kubuntu on my server which will be
used as a storage repository for photos and such.

I'm going to be using LVM to make the most of my different sized hard
drives, (80GB/250GB/200GB2x120GB all SATA)

The last time I used LVM was with Suse and I did it all with YAST
which setup everything for me pretty much and was nice and easy, this
time with Kubuntu there's no GUI to do it for me (I installed Kubuntu
with KDE as I'll be using it for other things like Bittorrent etc).

I've been going over the how to's here: http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/LVM-HOWTO/ .

Under one of the examples they talk of using LVM with striping but to
do so you need LVM2, which Kubuntu uses.

I need to know what the difference is in using LVM with striping or
just LVM. I realise what striping is but will this allow me to remove
a drive and replace it if need be, and move the data of a drive that
needs to be replaced? What other caveats could there be?

Any help appreciated?

Thanks

Nathan
