It's actually not too hard to do manually if you know where the start 
sectors are meant to be (Linux is easy, DOS is harder). Even rebuilding 
extended partitions is possible if you know roughly where they start 
(you can search for the signature if you know where to look).

Are you sure you didn't lose anything other than the partition table? Or 
are you asking how to recover after a mke2fs (which is something 
different entirely...)?
