Lyndsay,

ISP support staff are trained to explain simple concepts and walk you 
through them over the phone, in aid of troubleshooting a fault.
Yes, they don't support Linux - but as pointed out, DNS is os-agnostic. 
(You need it, or the Internet doesnt work - regardless of your platform.) 
So general questions around the DNS would be fine.

That and the 'nslookup' program is almost identical between windows and 
Linux.

Mark. (I can't think of a way to say the rest of what I want to say, that 
doesn't sound harsher than I intend. Sorry.  It'd be so much easier if 
ISPs weren't close-minded about operating systems... )
