EEEEEK!!! Not me!!! That's undeserved cruelty!!!! I'm not the brightest bulb
around, and occasionally delve in masochism, but I'm not quite ready for Debian
yet!
This is for a newb with an old P3 as their first home PC. He tried a few
distros & Kubuntu seemed to work & support all the hardware OK out of the box,
unlike the others we tried. He was also quite happy & comfortable with it (Yes,
OK---- I get the point, I guess he must be a real masochist :-)
He uses emacs extensively at work & figured he may as well stick the ol'
familiar tool on his "new" system...
I'm still a SUSE/Mandriva lad by preference :-) I also like emacs, but make
sure I have the hardware to run it!
Also may be of interest...
I also set up a dual boot system for someone else over the weekend. Linux just
for internet access intially, but we'll see :-)
Windows install went fine. However, various versions of Mandriva, SUSE, Ubuntu,
Kubuntu all failed to support either the LAN or modem properly (internal Lucent
winmodem).
I threw SimplyMEPIS 3.4 at it, & EVERYTHING WORKED PERFECTLY. Trivial LAN
setup- worked, give KPPP a phone no, user & pwd, & that worked too. If only
more Linux distro's did that, you might see the user base increasing faster.
I'm not that comfortable with MEPIS as a serious desktop Linux, but was
impressed with the ease of install & great package selection.
Cheers,
Brent
