Thanks Sebastian,

The suggested solution is not available in the versions of kscd on either the 
suse9.2 or suse9.3 boxes.  I googled it and found:

I cant find suseplugger.  So I entered it on konsole and clicked on "sound 
device",. This just took me into Yast which doesnt provide the DAE option 
either.
