Hmm, I'd be inclined to do things such as disable as much as possible in
the BIOS.  But also I've found that some installs you may need to pass
some options to the kernel .. to disable DMA, USB, PCMCIA etc.

Are these install or live CDs it is not working with?  Some live CDs seem
to work different (use different kernels and scripts) to the install CDs.
