Hi Folks,
Any members in the Wellington area want to unload their old dial up
modem? I'm arriving 30 December and will need one for the first few
months, at least.
Does anyone know if Australian (e.g. AusTel approved) modems and
landline phones are legally/technically OK for the NZ phone system?
Telecom NZ won't reply to my email query on this.
Thanks very much, and looking forward to meeting you in 2007,
Carl Turney
Currently Melbourne Australia
G'day there!
The legal position has already been answered. (No green tick on the bottom, no connection)
Technically, there are issues with the signal levels used between the modem and the exchange.
Now, I'm dredging back into the dim past (~1998) but IIRC there's about a 6db difference between Aus & NZ, but for the life of me I can't recall which way. I think the NZ levels are lower which would imply that the exchange may suffer deafness unless you are a LOOONG way away from it, which won't be true unless you settle up the back end of Wainui or the Akatarawas.
To be safe, stick with one that has been NZ Telepermitted...
Cheers, Phreadde :-)
