You probably want to use something like VNC for this purpose.  It allows
you to have an X display which goes to a "virtual display" buffer, that
you can have replicated to a window on your screen or leave
disconnected.

You'll want to investigate commands like xvncviewer and vncserver.

There are quite a few variations on VNC these days (with differing
levels of compression), but if you're only using it on a LAN for
relatively low traffic applications (eg, no rapid graphics updates) then
it probably doesn't matter.  I still use the original versions as a
"place holder" display for various applications that need X, but which I
don't want to display on a screen.
