The times I use it tend to be when I'm building something big (e.g. our 
product's entire source tree) while working on something else. I don't 
want the long build to interfere with what I'm trying to do on a smaller 
scale, so I nice (or renice if I forget) the long build to, say, +15). It 
now gives way to my normal processes, while still running when it can. 
Works well.

I'm a developer not a server admin so I can't really comment on 
admin-related uses.
