Hate to be obvious, but have you:
   1. enabled DHCP on the router,
   2. configured it to assign to your MAC address (good security),
   3. considered putting "map eth1" in the hotplug section of your
      /etc/network/interfaces,
   4. sacrificed a small animal at sunrise and worn the entrails on your
      head in the appropriate manner as prescribed in Section 1.4.16
      paragraph C of the manual?

Good luck getting WPA to work, I gave up.
