[wellylug] Usernames with a '.'

Hi all,

So there I was busy playing with the shiny new Ubuntu 5.10 install (I'd 
look pretty bloody silly turning up to the Linux Conference with a Win XP 
laptop) and was trying to create a user 'ian.beardslee' and it was 
spitting the dummy over things - didn't seem to like the '.'

I know that they can be done - my slackware install can.  It means that I 
can get the username and password on the laptop and the work Windows 
network sync'd.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to enable a '.' in the middle 
of a username on Ubuntu 5.10?
