Hi Everyone,
I am looking for a total revamp of my system with the installation of a new OS, currently RH9.
I do not wish to do any of this myself, but would like to observe it all. I would like suggestions
of an OS and also a quote to get it going, this quote would include getting the system the way I
want it with everything working and installed that I require as outlined below.
This system was put together in Aug 2003 and there were a couple of things at the start that I had
problems with but the list has slowly grown of things that do not work, and things I cannot have
such as MSN messenger.
Current problems
-------------------
Lots of web pages show what looks like a piece of blue jigsaw instead
of the actual picture. Lots of web pages are unreadable. Mozilla 1.4.2
Also recently I had to go to the ftp site of a business and download some
files. With my Mozilla the 'sign in or log on window' never even opened
just got an error message, but as soon as I tried this on the win box also
with Mozilla the window opened and I was able to type the login name
and password.
Problems with sounds, all sorts of error messages including this one
most of the time:-
The Helix Player plugin and Mozilla were compiled with a different
version of gcc
Other times I try sounds, like live radio, a new window opens saying
'running helper' but nothing ever happens. Sometimes I strike it lucky and
Real Player opens and works!
I cannot usually see any video clips at all.
The Flash thing installed, whatever it is.
I have tried and tried to burn CD's with Nautilus, but there is something wrong with its setup
and it always says there is not enough space to make the image, or similar. Then I got xcd roast.
Sometimes I have managed to back up stuff with this but more times than not it crashes the whole
system, to the point I just have to turn the pc off. I have recently managed to back up half of my
home directory but after 2 more weeks at it never managed to back up the rest. Use a new CD each time.
With open office I do not have enough fonts.
Gaim is an old version and I have given up trying to change it.
Printing, not a biggie but the colours are totally off to whatever is on the screen.
Things I want the new system to have:-
------------------------------------
An easy way to install new programs
An easy way to update everything
A pdf reader
GIMP
mutt mail
MC editor
Mozilla mail or similar windoze type mail (as well as mutt)
(What I do now is use mutt for most mail as I love the keyboard stuff and I use
my mozilla mail for all mail with URL's/graphics etc. I just send mail across from mutt to my other
email addy. Sounds odd but I like this system and want to keep it.)
I still want access to the command line.
Watch video clips
DVD playing software
CD player and volume control/mixer
Sounds working i.e. live radio on the web.
Printer working from everywhere
A home folder that is easy to use like Nautilus
A CD burner that works, and a way to copy music CD's.
Open Office - must have
ALL my current stuff must be saved, backed up etc. even the mozilla mail,
then it must all be restored. Stuff includes all the files in my home dir, all my mutt mail files,
mozilla mail files, all photos, all open office files, all my bookmarks. If possible all my stored
passwords.
MSN messenger
GAIM or LICQ and Yahoo Instant Messenger
A way to use a webcam
I currently have a shared setup with my partner's Win box which
we use heaps to access photos from our digital camera, and we really need to keep the shared
directory working.
I may think of more but this is all the essential stuff. Not bothered
which browser or x-mailer I have, Firefox for instance would be fine.
I do not want any hardware upgrades that I am aware of.
I have a wireless mouse. Location is Johnsonville.
thanks a lot
Lyndsay
