Hey Everybody,

Cheers for all your help.

Yes I am using Slackware. Version 10.1.

I have just added the scanner group and rebooted. This time I didn't get any
errors, didn't get anything output at all though.

I checked my sane settings and found I am using sane1.0.15 there are two newer
versions out but according to the list of supported devices my scanner
( CanoScan 646u ) isn't mentioned under any of them and when running the
command:

 #sane-find-scanner

I get...
 found USB scanner (vendor=0x04a9, product=0x220b) at /dev/usb/scanner0
found USB scanner (vendor=0x04a9 [Canon], product=0x220b [CanoScan]) at
  libusb:001:002
 # Your USB scanner was (probably) detected. It may or may not be supported by
   # SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage.

scanimage -L reports that no scanners were found. So this is starting to look
a bit unlikely. Its no big loss as I only ever seem to find a need for a
scanner about once a year but it would be nice to get it sorted.

Thanks,
Ben.
