Yes I was thinking the same thing when I read this.
I've had the same error with SUSE under two different but similar  
conditions.
In the first instance I was using a SATA drive and in the other I was  
using a cheap IDE Raid controller.
In both instances the OS detected everything and installed fine but  
then on the first reboot the kernel panic occurred.

In both cases I solved the problem by changing hardware  
configurations as in both cases the hardware choices were 'nice' but  
not necessary.

If it is hardware you may want to boot via CD into rescue mode to see  
if you can mount the hard drive manually (or even just to see if the  
OS is still detecting all your partitions).
