[wellylug] Ubuntu 6.06 - More Impressions

Just installed Ubuntu 6.06 on my iMac ...
My hdd was in a strange state; a previous Ubuntu install (since deleted)
had left its bootloader behind -- the Desktop/Live CD installer couldn't
figure out how to install yaboot, and gave up. On the other hand, it was
able to connect to the net and get me onto IRC to discuss the problem,
and log the bug on launchpad.net :-)
I switched to the Alternative CD (the old 'Install') which gave me more
feedback, and I was able to create a new partition to hold the boot data
(Apple machines are weird on the disk, stay away if you can!)
Once the OS was in, I had the usual problems; screen resolution was
incorrect, and couldn't be changed successfully from the GNOME
interface, so I had to go hacking the xorg.conf directly; once that was
done, it's fine.
My only serious problem that remains is the configuration of
Mac-on-Linux; I can't get the VT/fb display running with the right
number of colours ... it's stuck at 8-bit, which is horrible. However, I
can't imagine that it's impossible to fix ... any advice welcome :-)
