Well I think I now have that sorted - at least it didn't happen when I
booted up today.

After some hunting for why Skype was spitting the dummy, I discovered
some references to point to the Realmagic Hollywood+ in my PC. It uses
an EM8300 module which seems spits the dummy with ALSA and OSS - dunno
why it wasn't happening in ubuntu 5.10 ?!?

So by putting the EM8300 in the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-oss file, it
seems to have fixed - at least the PC booted without me resetting to
tonight .. I suppose I should see if it continues to behave.

I thought it may have been what was causing the problem with Skype, but
sadly no. Jethro's wee patch sorted that.
