Hi all,
Time for me to weigh in on the events of last month's meeting. Let me start off
by saying I fully support Jethro's idea for the new meeting format. I think
that it provides a good balance between presentations and chatting amongst
ourselves.
It's been suggested by some people that because WellyLUG hasn't posted a lot of
flyers and set up Linux PC's around the community and "actively promoting open
source", that WellyLUG hasn't been doing a worthwhile job. I disagree with this
point of view 100%. While promoting Linux around the community is not a bad
idea, it is not the be all and end all of WellyLUG. Speaking as a relatively
new member, I can say that I have benefited greatly from WellyLUG and that I
would not be having as much success today with my Linux laptop had it not been
for the assistance I've received from WellyLUG members. This has all been
without formal presentations and without Linux promotions. Hence, although I
agree with Jethro's new meeting format, I would like to say that even if we kept
WellyLUG exactly as it is, WellyLUG would still be very worthwhile.
Another common complaint is that too few people help out with things such as
installfests. I would like to say that if the next installfest was held in a
more central wheelchair accessible venue (as opposed to Petone), I would do all
I could to help out.
As far as sponsorship goes, I am in support of the idea of WellyLUG temporarily
joining forces with NZOSS for the events that require such sponsorship.
Jethro, are you still going to go ahead with the idea of setting up a link on
the website to become an official member as a way of defining membership? When
it becomes time to make a decision on all of these matters, I definitely want my
vote to be counted.
I am definitely opposed to WellyLUG becoming incorporated.
Thanks for listening to my views on the situation.
Cheers,
Steve :-)
