The 386 kernel is a stock kernel that will/should work on all systems
based on the Intel 386 architecture - 486, Pentium (Pro, 2, 3, 4),
Celeron, Xeon, Duron, Athlon etc. Because it leaves out the extra
features the different processors have (taking things to the lowest
common denominator) it is generally installed be default onto an
Intel/AMD system.
The K7 kernel is a stock kernel that has been optimised for systems
running the AMD Duron, Athlon and Sempron processors. Often these
optimised kernels will also include SMP support.
You'll also find that there is a 686 kernel for the higher end/newer
Intel processors.
