Thought there might be people on the list interested in this. It comes highly recommended.

It provides instructions for doing the homework work on Linux/Solaris and/or Windows.

For a 'free' course it is pretty substantial and you can download the material to get an idea of the course detail.

The 1st session of the free "Java Intro Programming" online bootcamp
course was a huge success. More than 3000 people have registered
once and more than 250 people have graduated (meaning they have done
all 34 pieces of homeworks mostly using NetBeans.)

The 2nd and expanded 10-week "Java intro programming" online bootcamp
course will start from May 25th, 2006.

Details:
=======
A free "10-week Java Intro Programming Online Bootcamp" course is
about to start from May 25th, 2006. This bootcamp is for anyone
who wants to learn Java programming for the first time. In this
course, students will learn how to write, compile, and run Java
programs. They will also learn essential object oriented programming
concepts such as inheritance and polymorphism. Students will write
and run the Java programs using both command line tools and mostly
NetBeans IDE 5.0.

Each week, students are expected to do weekly homework after
studying the presentation and hands-on lab material. There is also
class group alias where students can ask questions. (We've already
secured many volunteers who are ready to answer any questions students
might have.)

The only thing you have to do in order to register for the course is
send an email to the following address (if you have not done so
already).
