Hi Peter,

I think most distros come with a library for parallel port access 
already installed (libieee1284)- I don't know how savvy you are with the 
programming side of things (you did ask for a low-level!), but there are 
libieee1284-dev packages if you are comfortable with that- or if you 
prefer other languages there should be other binding packages also 
(there is definitely a phython one, and I'll be very surprised if there 
isn't a perl one too)
