Hello Adam,

no idea about the error message.

In my opinion there is probably no link between your MBR and the GRUB
stage1 file. You must setup the link between the MBR and the stage1
file.

You should provide all commands in the order you used them. It's
difficult to give support without a knowledge of all steps you've
already done.

Try the following link for more information:

The next link is the link to the GRUB manual.

http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/grub.html#Troubleshooting
(Just passing you to the troubleshooting section!

Using GRUB is in my opinion just simple.

A simple way to get a working GRUB is just:
* Install HDD in a running LINUX system already having a GRUB installed
  (via USB. I have an adapter that allows me to attach any disk via
   USB, probably you local computer dealer have something like that.)
* Setup partitions with fdisk.
* Remove HDD (if attached via USB)
* Install it. Just plugin the connector!
* sfdisk -R $USBDEVICE
* umount $USBBOOTPARTITION
* Install GRUB using "grub-install"
(You can repeat this as often as required)

If you have some other problems with this feel free to ask.
Probably I can help with other ideas.

I've attached a script to create a bootable HDD/USBSTICK with a "minimum
system" at it. Probably you can get some additional ideas if you
understand the way it works. DO NOT INSERT YOUR DISK AND RUN THIS
SCRIPT! IT WILL ERASE EVERYTHING STORED AT /DEV/SDA! It's just something
to give an idea of the requirements to get a running LINUX!

kind regards
Gerald
