It's finally hitting the airwaves. Sun have now (or at least in a few
hours from now) licensed Java under the GPL v2
This includes all of the key Java implementations
- Java Standard Edition (traditionally run on desktops)
- Java Micro Edition (traditionally run on phones and embedded devices)
- Java Enterprise Edition (traditionally run in business infrastructure)
(NB: also to be released under CDDL)
This is a big day for Open Source with the majority of businesses around
the world now running on an open source runtime environment. It's also a
big blow to .net which is always a nice side benefit ;-)
Stay tuned as most of the Linux distros will now be including the JRE in
the base packages as the final barrier has now been removed!
