I was hoping David might say...
It is a perl program which runs continuously.
It pings some URL (eg www.google.com) every x sec.
If no reply eventuates it keeps trying until after y sec
it logs into the router and reboots it. It keeps doing this
until the ping is returned. There is a log, and with my
ADSL router it seems to have to reboot 2-3 times a week.
Worst was yesterday when contact was lost for a couple of hours,
but it came back eventually...

If David is around you could ask him for a copy of the
script, if not I can probably send you my copy...
