Two methods that might work:

First, try manually changing the configuration of the X server.

Run the command 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure -plow xserver-xorg' and answer
the questions.

Try having it do automatic detection and stuff, but if that doesn't
work, manually give the answers you want.


If, and I recommend only if, that doesn't help then you can edit
/etc/X11/xorg.conf yourself to impose the correct settings.

Leave that as a last resort, and consult the manual page for that file,
to understand how.
