Hi Jim,
            Version of Ubuntu is 6.06.Yes there is an option at boot to start in Safe mode. I tried this today and the disk ran straight through to a small window with a mouse arrow in it then slowly small icons appeared with print I couldn't read. Finally the window vanished and I was left with a brown screen. 
        There is a newer version of Ubuntu 6.10 out there do you think I would have less problems if I ran that?cheers Leo.
