I think Leo is currently running from a LiveCD, and therefore can't
make these changes.

Even the Safe Mode startup is having problems, sounds like it's
setting up the desktop, but getting the resolution wrong.

As it's the 6.06 CD that he's trying, I'd suggest seeing what a more
recent version can do. 6.10 is out there, and 7.04 is just about to be
released - the beta 7.04 seems pretty good to me.

Where is local to you, Leo? Can someone get a newer CD to you?
