There is a hylafax package for Ubuntu in universe.

Likely, yes.  What does the kernel say about it during the boot process?
You can review that, in a normal install, by running 'dmesg' and
checking the output for information on your serial ports.

Does that list the port at all?

Also, install 'setserial' and see if that can determine (or set)
information for the port.

Finally -- is this a "plug and pray ^W play" modem?  You will almost
certainly find it nicer to work with when in non-plug-and-play mode.

I was unable to get ISAPnP working under 2.6 last time I tried, not that
I put a lot of effort into it.
