Here's mine regarding servers:


Buy vendor hardware. And buy a service contact.


Sure, it will cost you more to start with, but a good IBM or Dell server
will run without problems for years, and in the event of anything going
wrong, you just call them up, and they send someone to fix the hardware
for you under the support contract.

I would NEVER install a whitebox system as a production server, because
although you might save initially, if anything goes wrong, you'll be the
person driving out to the data center to fix the system.

For under $2000 you can get good vendor hardware with 3yr next business
day response support contacts.


Vendor servers are designed to be run 24x7 for the next 5yrs, but often
you will find 10yr old servers which have been running since they day
they were purchased without a problem.


Dell Poweredge 860's are great as well as IBM Xseries. (although the
IBMs are often a bit more pricey)
