Thanks Jethro, it is a fakeRAID for sure prety much why I was asking. 
Things have moved a long way but doubt it is very well supported yet.

Looks like software RAID will be it - better kick my brain back into 
gear as it has been YEARS since I last did it and assume tools have 
improved (I hope so anyway :)
