[wellylug] Purchasing a new laptop

Not  what you were asking, but tomorrow at Gracefield, Wednesday 19, Turners
will auction about 15 laptops for prices less than $500.

Personally I have bought 2 Dells, put Ubuntu into them and done well. The
worst that happens is that it might require repairs and go to a maximum of
say $700.
They are sold without OS but usually have a MS sticker.
As I understand it there is no way to buy a new laptop in NZ at present
without buying MS.

As another issue I have never had a problem installing ubuntu into a Dell. I
seldom have problems with Compaq (particularly Evo s), but the standard
office machines sold under the HP label and looking almost identical to most
of the Compaqs give me a lot of trouble. Anyone any idea? I presume it's
different video cards or something similar. The usual symptom is to spend
hours installing and either limp home or fail completely.
