Hi all,
Thanks to everyone that wrote with advice about getting a copy of
Ubuntu. To answer those who wrote to say "why don't you download
Ubuntu/Mepis", I wanted to get hold of a DVD because I don't have my
own internet connection yet. I want to get up and running as soon as
possible after I obtain my new computer. Thanks to those who offered
to burn me a copy. The main problem with using Ubuntu's ShipIt service
is that the DVD can take weeks to arrive, whereas I wanted to be able
to play with the system straight away (I start work on Wednesday,
after which I'll have a bit less time on my hands).
In the end, I went into Dick Smith Electronics (the one next to the
Cotton Store in the CBD, I think it's on Vivian St) and bought their
copy of Ubuntu 6.10. (Tx to those who suggested this). It costs $10
and comes with two DVDs, a standard edition and one optimised for
AMD64 chips. I gather that there's a lot of extra open source software
on there, using all that extra DVD space, which is what I wanted. I've
only run it straight off the DVD so far, because I'm using a friend's
computer and I don't want to mess with his system. It ran very easily
and very well, requiring very little setup and connecting to broadband
without any effort on my part. The software that comes with it seems
well-selected, and it's quite nice to use in comparison with the copy
of existing copy of XP, which keeps getting infected with spyware (I
guess I could fix this, but again I don't want to mess with my
friend's system). I'm looking forward to when I move into my new
apartment and can then set up a computer of my own with my music etc -
the Rhythmbox program that comes with Ubuntu looks promising too.
If anyone wants a burnt copy to avoid paying the $10 I'm happy to make
one - I'm in Newtown for the next two weeks and will then be living in
Thorndon. But DSE's service also seems pretty good value to me.
Carl Turney -- I come from New Zealand but I've been overseas
(Melbourne, then a RTW trip) for the past four years, leading to a
slightly internationalised kiwi accent. Hope that you're enjoying
Wellington - maybe we'll bump into each other sometime.
cheers,
Carl
