[wellylug] OpenSolaris stuff

A couple of interesting things from the world of OpenSolaris.

First off here is a blog entry that sort of explains OpenSolaris and the
variety of distros it is producing.

The CDDL license ends up producing a slightly different result than
GPLv2 but has already produced a quite nice ecosystem and diversity of
distros.

Secondly one of those distros is the Solaris Express Development
Edition, which is a slightly hardened but quite cutting edge release
based on OpenSolaris and a bunch of other developer relevant tools.

It's going to be released every three months plus you can buy support
for it if you wish.

This is a departure from the Ubuntu/Fedora six month type releases so it
will be interesting to see how it pans out.

I installed it and to my astonishment it was really easy (compared to
normal Solaris installs) but the options where also very limited so may
frustrate some people. I ended up going back to the OpenSolaris
Community Release as my working install.

Having watched this transition from within Sun it has been a LOOOONNGGGG
road but it sure is nice seeing the evolution of *nix the massive
support behind Gnome and the improved development speed of X.org.

Cheers, Rob.
