Of course, there is a alternative project in the works- a totally Free &
Open Source graphics card:

It's currently only at prototype stage, and even when it's complete, it
will not be close to the performance levels of the main competitors, and
probably more expensive. Also, at this stage it's PCI only (not PCIe) I
believe, but hey it's a start!
I do wonder though why Intel doesn't jump on the graphics card
bandwagon- especially with the growing demand, AMD/AMD merging, access
to engineers, etc. and 65nm fab plants.
