Welcome to the list!

If you are running a new version of ubuntu then my guess is they are
using Xorg (the X.org-X11) for X windows stuff. So you can probably run
this command from the command line:

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg 

(or if that doesn't work and ubuntu is running previous X server you can
try dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 )

then just select whatever the defaults are- if I recall correctly you
can choose the "easy" setting and it will autodetect most of your
hardware without problems. Give it a shot and post your results.
