When you installed it as root, did you click the "Run Google Earth now"
button at the end? If so, try running this:

sudo chown -R cliff ~/.googleearth
sudo chown -R cliff ~/.local/share/applications/googleearth.desktop

Substitute cliff for whatever your username is
