Oh, I don't blame them.  I don't use any external storage devices
routinely but when I do it wasn't uncommon for me hate the fact that I
did have to go to the shell to get them to safely unmount.

These days, as I understand it, at least Ubuntu is able to get this
right and send the appropriate SCSI disconnect messages when the
"Unmount Volume" option is used to disconnect from the iPod.

I have not verified that, though, and don't think distribution advocacy
is the most helpful response to the original posters request. :)
