Thanks everyone for your help on my Xubuntu question. I actually managed
to solve the problem. I tried downloading version 7.04 from a bit
torrent and it seemed to boot straight away.

When I installed Xubuntu, I set the partition size to 14.8 GB. I have a
40 GB HDD, so I wanted to save some space for Windows XP if I needed to
reboot with my original factory settings. Funnily enough, after
installing Xubuntu, I found out that my "File System" drive has only 500
Mb of free space left. Not enough if I want to add more programs.

This would lead me to believe that it might be worth reformatting, and
then reinstalling Xubuntu again, but increasing the partition size. I
booted in Windows XP mode to check some settings. I found that the
windows XP C drive is only taking up 3.5GB of space (these are the
original factory settings excluding all the extra stuff I added, which I
backed up elsewhere).

While I don't wish to get rid of Windows completely, when installing
Xubuntu again, I am thinking of setting the partition size to 35 GB, in
other words, leaving 5 GB of free space for XP, should I need it in an
emergency. Any suggestions on this one? Is this the right move to make?
