[wellylug] Kubuntu 6.10 desktop problem

Just installed Kubuntu 6.10 on an old laptop.  When kde starts, kde 
issues error "process died unexpectedly" in a dialogue box.  I wouldn't 
be so concerned about this except that all of the files I initially 
placed on the desktop have disappeared!  They are still in the desktop 
directory (phew!), they just do not appear on the physical desktop - you 
know, the pretty one(s)!

Any suggestions on how to fix this anyone?
