Well if you got an error from mdadm I would think it was raid related.
How about doing an fdisk on /dev/hda or /dev/sda or whatever you have in
your box, and printing the partition table- just check to see if there
are any partitions formatted like this:
/dev/sda2             255       19457   154248097+  fd  Linux raid
autodetect
if so then you may have setup a raid mirror during installation
(although I don't know how that could have happend).

Another thing you can check is the LVM status by running pvscan and
lvscan- what do these say?
