Of course the problem with the AppleTV is that it's closed source... :-)
But seriously, if you want a cheap PC platform media player, just build
a desktop PC, or find one on special that suits your need.
Desktops are dirt cheap, and run standard Linux, although they do have
the disadvantage of sometimes being a bit noisy...
As Lindsay said though, a xbox running Linux would probably do
everything you need...
