I have now tried out the drive.

It is recognised and works perfectly with the usb-storage driver
(Debian Woody, 2.4.27 kernel).  It slowed my machine down a lot at
first, until I figured out that I had compiled verbose logging into
the usb-storage driver (millions of lines of logs!).  I corrected
that, and now everything is fine.

It needed an external power adaptor when plugged into my on-board usb
(USB 1, VIA), but ran from bus power when plugged into a USB 2 PCI
card.
