[wellylug] Technology copyright debate in parliament

The communication below is on the Greens mailing list. It is about twelve
paragraphs of fairly lucid defense of open standards. I can't find it
summarised on the Greens site, but the debate will be elsewhere. The point
is that this is before parliament at present. If anyone want the full speech
of  a few hundred words I can send it privately or if there is enthusiasm,
I'll post the lot.

Second Reading Speech, 23rd October 2007*
The Greens alone opposed this bill at its first reading. We voted against it
because, contrary to the ministry's 2002 advice, it served to protect access
control technology, which is technology that has been used to price
discriminate and control geographical distribution of works, to the
detriment of users.
